Kenmore Group

Kenmore Group of Companies

The Kenmore Group is one of the largest groups in Papua New Guinea. We currently employ approximately 1500 staff and have sales in excess of K500 million (US$210 million) each year.

A merger in 1991 of the original Kenmore Group and the Dylup Group of Companies created what is now the Kenmore Group.

The original Kenmore Group was founded in 1976 when our Chairman Dr. Lucio C. Tan was invited to invest in Papua New Guinea and started the Melanesian Tobacco factory in Lae. Over the years further investments were made in the Rumion piggery, in Atlas Steel and in property. Initially, the property investments were at Six Mile, and then later Ela Beach Tower was built and other residential and commercial units were acquired.

The Dylup Group can trace its history back to the Pacific Taxi Service. During the sixties and early seventies the original business grew and a motor dealership was started which became known as PNG Motors.

At the same time new businesses were started up, these included Daikin (air-conditioning) and PNG Air Freight (TNT Air Cargo). During this time the business changed ownership and name on more than one occasion.

In 1986 the various businesses, which were by then known as PNG Associated Industries, were purchased by Dylup Investment Corporation Limited. From then until the merger with the Kenmore Group, the core businesses expanded and new businesses were introduced. Some of the more successful new businesses included First Investment Finance Limited and Trans Melanesian Airways Limited (Wridgways PNG).
In 1991 the majority shareholders of the Dylup Group accepted an offer from the owner of the original Kenmore Group and the foundation was laid for the creation of the Kenmore Group as we now know it.

Today the Kenmore Group of Companies has seven main divisions and includes over twenty-seven different operations. Set out in the notes below and the diagram overleaf is the current Group structure and a brief narrative of the Group’s operations.

Investment in property exceeds K127 million and includes mainly residential and commercial property available for lease located in Port Moresby and Lae.

The management of the Property Division is centralised in Port Moresby.

Traditionally vacancy levels have been negligible. It remains the priority to maintain full occupancy through the provision of cost-effective, secure and quality units.

Further investments continue to be made in property through development projects at Kenmore Tradecentre and Badili Hill (Kenmore City).

The Industrial Division embraces four major operating activities.

These operating activities are strategically located in the two major cities of Papua New Guinea – Port Moresby (the capital city) and Lae in Morobe Province.

Atlas Steel is the leading manufacturer of Nails, Fencing, Reinforcing Mesh and Gabion Basket. Atlas Steel is also the leading supplier of Structural Steel, Reinforcing Steel, Merchant Steel, Pipes and Plate in Papua New Guinea. With manufacturing centers in both Port Moresby and Lae, the businesses are ideally placed to supply local needs.

South Pacific Steel is the leading manufacturer and distributor of Roofing and Sheetmetal products. South Pacific Steel is also the only manufacturer of sheetmetal office furniture tagged as “Granspan” which includes filing cabinets, desk, lockers, bookcases, water containers, coffee tables, waste bins, beds, patrol boxes and wheel barrows.

Daikin through branches in Port Moresby and Lae retails and services Acson, Chunlan and Daikin air- conditioners. The construction section is responsible for large-scale installations and has carried out multi- million kina contracts. These include the National Parliament Building, Bank of Papua New Guinea, Pacific Place, Crowne Plaza Hotel and contracts for the Australian High Commission and re-development of Port Moresby airport.

Rumion, is PNG’s largest producer of pigs with population around 12,000 head. Rumion is the major supplier to an associated company ‘Prima Smallgoods’. In addition to pig production Rumion grows corn (maize) exclusively for stockfeed and has a small beef herd.

The Transport Division encompasses two main operating entities: PNG Air Freight (trading as TNT Air Cargo) and Trans Melanesian Airways (trading as Wridgways PNG). Each company combines local knowledge with outside expertise ensuring efficient and effective operation at local and international level.

PNG Motors is the leading distributor of passenger vehicles in Papua New Guinea. This success is attributable to offering a quality product supported by a full range of service facilities and parts backup. PNG Motors hold the PNG distribution rights for Mazda, Hyundai, Suzuki and Ford vehicles. Ford products are marketed from separate premises to those of PNG Motors under the name Niu Ford.

The extensive branch network covers four major locations: Port Moresby, Lae, Mount Hagen and Kokopo. In addition to these, dealers in Alotau, Popondetta, Kimbe, Wewak, Madang and Kavieng have been appointed.

“We don’t promise you the earth, we deliver it to you.”

TNT Air Cargo is the largest airfreight forwarder in the country. TNT is based in Port Moresby with seventeen branches to ensure that all major local centers are serviced. Freight is handled internationally through TNT Express Worldwide network and is now tracked by computer from source to destination by the TNT freight tracking system.

Wridgways PNG handles domestic and international removal of personal effects.

The philosophy of PNG Motors is to provide a comprehensive range of parts and service facilities. Our fully equipped service centres provide total service facilities including mechanical, panelshop, auto-electrical and air conditioning. Apart from holding a full range of genuine parts, PNG Motors has available quality non-genuine parts for most popular makes and models. In particular, PNG Motors hold the franchise of Ryco filters, and Hella lighting and electrical equipment. PNG Motors supply quality products and a full range of backup services for an individual or a fleet buyer.

The finance Division is focused on First Investment Finance. While it was only set up in the late 1980’s, it is already well established within the local banking community.

At present core business operations center around finance leases and commercial loans. First Investment Finance has over the years provided competitive financial solutions to a comprehensive range of clients nationwide. It has also developed a vibrant niche market within PNG based entities supplying goods and services to the growing resource industry.

The Head Office (Administration Division) is located on the top floor of Ela Beach Tower. This office provides corporate and company secretarial services, information technology support, human resource management, strategic planning, financial and treasury management to the Group.

The continued growth of the Kenmore Group is dependant on three factors:
• The provision of quality goods and services at competitive prices to our customers
• The continuing support of our investor and
• The commitment of our staff, This first factor is our major focus.
